Grizzly (Brown Bear) Captive
Grizzly (Brown Bear) Captive

One of the most incredible and beautiful animals in the world, in my opinion, is the Grizzly or Brown Bear. These images were taken of a Grizzly Boar (Male) in a captive situation. After reading the comments this particular organization had to say about their love for conservation and the reason for having this bear in captivity I decided research was definitely necessary. This bear was said to have been orphaned by its mother, so it was brought to this location for it's protection. I do understand what they claim to be trying to accomplish. Better understanding animals helps us to better understand their needs, therefore leads to better habitat enhancement and conservation methods. But I have to ask...at what cost? Does it really help the animal to remove it from the wild for any reason? or is it better to let nature take it's course. They seem to have some legitimate reasons for doing this on very special occasions...but what about all the organizations...including some Zoo's who seem to be getting rich at the expense of an animals life or freedom to live wild. Who continue to expand because of new animals captured. There are organizations who do this except they release the animals back into the wild. They are monitored until they know the animal is able to live wild on it's own again. If you really care about wildlife take a few minutes to look into this. I am not trying to place blame here....just trying to get those of us who care to think about it...Please comment on this post..I would really like to know how others feel about this!!!

  1. It dont make sense to keep these animals caged or captive if they can make it on their own in the wild.In most cases I think we should let mother nature do her thing.

  2. I agree with you to an extent. I hate seeing animals in captivity- especially if they're not being well taken care of. But take pandas for example...most pandas are in captivity to promote breeding to avoid extinction...is that wrong? Should we just let them go extinct? I do not believe that an animal that is healthy and can survive on it's own should be captured and forced to live in a cage, but if you've got a bald eagle with a permanently injured wing that would not be able to survive in the wild I honestly don't see the harm in keeping it in captivity.

  3. Captivity for entertainment is wrong. Usually, this is the case, even if its not admitted. Captivity for other reasons are debatable, but only if it is planned to release the animal back into the wild. Humans are really just THAT selfish. To make another life a living hell in order to entertain themselves. Most zoos will tell you that they are in captivity in order to keep them from being endangered. If this was the case, then why have such small living spaces? Why not make the animal as comfortable as possible. In the case of the bear, they are put in a space that is so small its almost deadly to its health. This is not for the animals best interest. It is strictly to "show off" mostly animals that are not native to our country.

  4. Thanks for the comments!!! This is a very touchy subject for some...but for most it's of no real concern. Because it does not seem to effect them directly, the subject is usually pushed to the side. I feel that in general us humans are selfish and even greedy at times and because of this a lot of natural resources are destroyed and animals exploited to entertain us...with that being said , there are many group and organizations that have the correct motives for doing what they do, but most are not seeing it through....I agree that most times mother nature is best left alone but we have done so much to screw mother nature up until sometimes we have to give her a helping hand. What kind of helping hand is needed? Raising pandas in captivity in order to keep them from being endangered or even extinct sounds good in theory...problem is even if we keep them in captivity and they continue to raise all we have is domesticated pandas...no wild ones...its sounds great but what really needs to be done is true conservation methods like... protecting their habitat, enforcing poaching laws, making sure they can survive in the wild. This is where our help needs to be concentrated. The bald eagle with a permanent injury..very understandable. Animals crammed into small cages or places is not right in any way that we may want to pretend, but not all organizations are bad....problem is where do we draw the line...need or greed?
